News Corp publications highlighted the apparent inconsistency between the public outcry over Abdel-Fattah's removal and the alleged removal of Friedman two years prior. This has led to the 2026 event looking increasingly untenable, with over 70 participants withdrawing.
Abdel-Fattah and nine other academics sent a letter to the Adelaide Festival board on February 6, 2024, requesting the rescinding of the invitation to Friedman. The reason? A controversial column Friedman had published, comparing the Middle East conflict to the animal kingdom. The board, however, rejected this request.
In a letter dated February 9, 2024, the board, chaired by Tracey Whiting, stated its commitment to artistic freedom. They explained that Friedman was programmed to contribute online, but due to scheduling issues, he would no longer participate. This suggests a different reason for his absence.
Abdel-Fattah's removal from the 2026 event marked the first time the board hadn't supported its director, Louise Adler's, programming decisions. After her cancellation, Abdel-Fattah accused the board of anti-Palestinian racism and censorship.
Abdel-Fattah argued that Friedman's article, which she found dehumanizing, was problematic. She contrasted this with her own removal, which she claimed was due to her identity as a Palestinian and her vocal advocacy against the extermination of her people.
And this is the part most people miss... In his column, Friedman used animal metaphors to describe various players in the Middle East conflict. He later acknowledged that some readers found his words insulting and dehumanizing. The festival board, in its statement, clarified that Abdel-Fattah's removal wasn't linked to the Bondi tragedy but was based on her past statements.
Abdel-Fattah had faced criticism for her comments about Israel. The board stated that continuing to program her would not be culturally sensitive. In 2023, Adler refused to remove Palestinian authors despite sponsor withdrawals, advocating for festivals as spaces for confronting difficult ideas.
