Many of us eagerly anticipate the annual renewal of our energy plans, but the overwhelming number of options from various retailers can be daunting. The government's Energy Made Easy website provides some guidance, but it's easy to feel lost in the maze of choices. As a result, we often rely on our retailer's recommendations, unknowingly falling victim to a costly trick.

Here's the catch: when your energy plan is up for renewal, your retailer might automatically select a new plan for you, claiming it's for your convenience. But this seemingly helpful gesture could be a devious ploy to overcharge you. Take my experience with Origin Energy, for example. They sent a cheerful email, suggesting a new plan called "Origin Easy" that was supposedly 2% cheaper than the reference price set by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

But wait, there's a twist! The email conveniently omitted crucial details. It failed to mention that much cheaper plans exist and that my current plan, which was already 17% below the reference price, could simply be renewed. Instead, they slyly chose their most expensive plan, taking advantage of my trust.

This deceptive practice has been going on for years, and despite my annual complaints, nothing changes. Origin Energy justifies their actions by claiming that transferring accounts to their default plans is standard industry practice, ensuring uninterrupted energy supply. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission's recent report reveals the shocking extent of this issue. It found that a staggering 73% of residential electricity customers in South-East Queensland, NSW, Victoria, and South Australia are not on their retailer's cheapest plan, costing them an average of $291 per year. This deceptive marketing tactic contributes to a collective cost of $1.5 billion for Australian households.

What's more, the quality and reliability of your energy supply remain unchanged, regardless of your retailer or plan. Retailers merely act as middlemen, collecting payments and passing them on to electricity and gas companies. So, why pay more for the same service?

It's time to take a stand against this deceit. I've contacted the ACCC, AER, and the NSW Energy & Water Ombudsman to shed light on this issue. This practice should be banned, and retailers must be held accountable for acting in their customers' best interests.

Here's a crucial tip: never blindly accept your retailer's suggested plan. Explore other options and compare prices. You could save hundreds of dollars annually, just like I'm about to do. Stay vigilant, and don't let your retailer pull the wool over your eyes!
