A controversial issue has emerged in the world of beauty pageants, with allegations of body shaming and bullying directed at the Miss Fiji Pageant Committee.
Dr. Peggy Ravusiro, Miss Fiji 2025, took to a press conference to share her experience, claiming that she and other contestants were subjected to unprofessional treatment and comments about their weight. She revealed that she was advised to lose more weight, with the suggestion that her weight could disqualify her from the competition.
Dr. Ravusiro also mentioned that her team, which included former Ms. South Pacific Alisi Rabukawaqa, was criticized, adding to the controversy. While the importance of strong representation in regional competitions is acknowledged, the manner in which these concerns were expressed has been called into question.
"Through the lens of pageantry, we promote female empowerment. It's a powerful message, but it's undermined when contestants are treated in such a manner," Dr. Ravusiro stated.
The Miss Fiji Pageant Committee has remained silent so far, promising to respond to these allegations today.
This story raises important questions about the treatment of contestants and the role of pageants in promoting positive body image and female empowerment.
