A Community's Unwavering Support: The Sluman Family's Fight Against Leukemia

In the face of a daunting challenge, the Sluman family has found solace and strength in the unwavering support of their North Bay community. Nearly a month after Chris Sluman's leukemia diagnosis, the family's financial burden has been significantly eased by the generosity of donors, with the GoFundMe campaign reaching an impressive $115,699 as of February 6th. This remarkable outpouring of support has not only helped cover the family's treatment expenses but has also provided a sense of comfort and care during a difficult time.

The campaign, launched by the staff of Parkside Animal Hospital where Hailey Bertrand-Sluman works as a veterinarian, has been instrumental in covering the costs not covered by OHIP. As Chris undergoes intensive chemotherapy in Sudbury, the community's generosity continues to provide much-needed financial relief.

Hailey Bertrand-Sluman, reflecting on the past month, expressed her gratitude for the community's support. "Though it won’t stop me from trying, the continued outpouring of love and help even a month after diagnosis is absolutely astounding. You all have helped us feel so very cared for."

The family's journey has been a challenging one, with Chris's immune system remaining suppressed and requiring him to sleep most of the day to recover from treatment. Despite the physical toll, the family finds strength in moments with their daughter, Briar, and the community's support.

The community's response has been swift and generous, with two planned fundraisers this month. A "Night of Community and Support" dinner and silent auction on February 20th at Churchill’s Prime Rib House will benefit the family, organized by Steve and Mark Deacon of Deacon Wealth Management. Tickets are $250 per plate, with the entire fee going directly to the family. Another fundraiser, "Stand With Sluman," takes place on February 21st at Gateway City Brewery, featuring live music, trivia, and a silent auction with an entry fee of $20.

The GoFundMe campaign continues to accept donations to help cover treatment costs, travel, and lost income as Chris's care continues. The Sluman family's fight against leukemia is a testament to the power of community support, and the generosity of donors has been instrumental in easing their financial burden during this challenging time.
