Get Ready, Wichita! The Future of Basketball is Coming to Town This Weekend!
Before the glitz and glamour of endorsement deals, NBA draft suits, and national television appearances, the next generation of basketball superstars will be gracing Wichita with their presence. This weekend marks a golden opportunity for local fans to witness incredible talent up close and personal.
It all kicks off on Friday evening at Newman University, where Sunrise Christian's boys basketball program is proudly hosting the fourth annual Air Capital Hoopfest. This highly anticipated event will bring four of the nation's most elite high school basketball programs right to our doorstep.
This isn't just any tournament; it's a chance for Wichita to see future Division I standouts and potential NBA draftees before the rest of the country even knows their names. The pedigree of the participating teams speaks volumes about the caliber of play you can expect. We're talking about Sunrise Christian, Dream City Christian (from Arizona), Montverde Academy (Florida), and Veritas Academy (California). These aren't just schools; they're veritable pipelines to the NBA, having produced incredible talents like Joel Embiid, Cade Cunningham, Cooper Flagg, Gradey Dick, Matas Buzelis, and D'Angelo Russell. For our community, this event offers a unique chance to experience this level of basketball without having to travel far. Sunrise coach Kyle Lindsted shared his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s always special to have the opportunity to bring something like this to Wichita. There’s so many people in this community that support basketball and support our program, so it’s a lot of fun to be able to put this kind of product right there in our backyard.”
Sunrise Christian has made a deliberate effort to elevate their annual home games into a major event, especially since joining the Nike EYBL Scholastic League, which is widely recognized as the toughest high school basketball league in the nation. This league's demanding schedule means Sunrise is constantly competing against top-tier programs across the country. Therefore, this home stop isn't just a competitive advantage; it's also a fantastic showcase for Wichita's passionate basketball scene.
Coach Lindsted added, “It’s super exciting for us just to be able to stay at home at this point in the season. We have so much travel and such a hard schedule, so this is a nice little breath of fresh air for us. We don’t have to pack our bags this weekend.”
The Hoopfest boasts a packed schedule, offering multiple high-stakes matchups for fans to enjoy. The action begins Friday at 7 p.m. with Sunrise taking on Veritas. Saturday features a compelling doubleheader: first, Veritas will face Dream City at 6 p.m., followed by the weekend's most anticipated game – Sunrise versus Montverde. The event concludes Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with Montverde playing Veritas.
Ticket information is as follows: Adults can get in for $15, while kids, students, and seniors can purchase tickets for $8. For Coach Lindsted, who returned to Sunrise in 2023 after a six-year stint as an assistant coach at the Division I level with Wichita State and Minnesota, this event transcends mere star ratings. It's about demonstrating to Wichita fans the true essence of elite high school basketball when the stakes are high.
“It’s going to mirror high-level college basketball,” Lindsted explained. “This isn’t an all-star game where we’re just out there trading baskets. These are grind-it-out games. Guys are going to play very hard. It’s going to be well-scouted. It’s going to be physical.
I know Wichita fans love this style of basketball. They like it gritty and physical and tough. That’s what this is going to be.”
