Mental Health Stigma: Cambridgeshire's Side by Side Podcast with Gary Clarke and Allan Hughes (2026)

Breaking the Silence: Unveiling the Power of Mental Health Conversations in Cambridgeshire

In a bold move to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health, Cambridgeshire has launched an inspiring podcast initiative. But here's where it gets controversial: why is it so important, and what makes this podcast unique?

The inaugural episode features Gary Clarke, a mental health advocate and ex-prison officer, alongside Allan Hughes, the co-production lead at CPSL Mind. Together, these mental health champions are breaking barriers and supporting fathers through CPSL Mind's perinatal services, including the impactful Andy's Man Club in Peterborough.

Clarke, now a dedicated Perinatal Project Dads Worker at CPSL Mind, shares his perspective: "Life presents challenges, and men often face societal expectations to be providers. We're here to challenge that narrative and break the taboo. Mental health is about embracing your true self and becoming the best version of you, not conforming to external expectations."

Hughes adds, "These conversations are unfiltered, authentic, and timely. We're thrilled to collaborate with CPSL Mind to make mental health support accessible and relatable."

The Side by Side podcast, available on CPSL Mind's YouTube channel, promises to delve into a range of mental health topics. Future episodes will explore youth mental health and showcase local initiatives, offering a comprehensive insight into the community's mental health landscape.

And this is the part most people miss: the CPSL Mind team isn't stopping there. On February 14th, they'll be at Cambridge United Football Club, supported by the Cambridge United Foundation, to further emphasize their commitment to community mental health. This event is a powerful reminder that mental health support is for everyone, regardless of background or identity.

So, what do you think? Is this podcast a step towards a more open dialogue about mental health? Or is it just another initiative that scratches the surface? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
