Tennessee's coaching carousel is spinning, and a familiar face is set to return to the defensive backfield! The Volunteers are on the verge of appointing Derek Jones as their new cornerbacks coach, a move that strategically aligns with their new defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles. This isn't just a random hire; it's a deliberate choice to bring in someone with a proven track record and direct experience working alongside Knowles.
But here's where it gets interesting... The previous cornerbacks coach, Michael Hunter Jr., had a very brief, five-week stint with Tennessee before jumping to an NFL assistant coaching role with the Los Angeles Rams. Hunter Jr. himself had a connection to Knowles, having worked with him at Ohio State in 2024. This quick turnaround highlights the dynamic nature of college football coaching.
Jones arrives in Knoxville after spending the last four seasons at Virginia Tech, where he served as the defensive recruiting coordinator and cornerbacks coach. However, he wasn't part of the new coaching staff under the recently appointed head coach. Before his time with the Hokies, Jones had a significant tenure at Duke, where he spent several seasons working with Jim Knowles during the 2010s. Knowles was the defensive coordinator for the Blue Devils under David Cutcliffe during that period.
Jones's history at Duke is quite extensive. He had two separate stints as the defensive backs coach (2008-14 and 2018-19) and also coached the cornerbacks directly from 2015-17. Adding to his responsibilities, he also served as the assistant special teams coordinator (2008-17) and associate head coach (2018-19). Meanwhile, Knowles was coaching Duke's safeties in 2010 before ascending to the role of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017.
Following his time at Duke, Jones moved to Texas Tech for two seasons (2020-21), taking on roles as associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator, and secondary coach. It was after this that he joined Brent Pry’s staff at Virginia Tech.
And this is the part most people miss... During his tenure at Virginia Tech, Jones was instrumental in recruiting and developing some serious talent. He coached Dorian Strong, who became an All-ACC third-team performer in 2023 and an All-ACC honorable mention in 2024. Strong's impressive stats include 28 pass breakups and seven interceptions during his college career. His development was so strong that he earned invites to the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine, ultimately becoming a sixth-round NFL Draft pick last year.
Jones also played a key role in recruiting Mansoor Delane to Virginia Tech, coaching him for three seasons. Delane, a Freshman All-American for the Hokies in 2022, has since transferred to LSU and is projected to be a top cornerback for the 2026 NFL Draft, having already earned All-SEC first-team honors in 2025 and All-ACC third-team honors in 2024.
His recruiting prowess wasn't limited to individual stars. Jones was credited with helping Virginia Tech secure six of the top 25 in-state prospects during the 2023 recruiting cycle and five of the top 25 in Virginia for the 2024 class.
At Texas Tech, Jones's coaching impact was evident as he tutored Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, an NFL Draft pick, along with Damarcus Fields and Zech McPhearson, both All-Big 12 selections, with McPhearson also being an NFL Draft pick.
Now, let's talk about Duke... Jones's time with the Blue Devils was a period of significant success. He was part of a coaching staff that led the team to six bowl appearances, secured the ACC Coastal Division title in 2013, and achieved an impressive 46-32 overall record between 2013 and 2018, including a remarkable 10-win season in 2013. During this era, he coached Ross Cockrell, who earned All-ACC honors twice, became a fourth-round NFL Draft pick after an outstanding career with 12 interceptions, and set program records for career passes defended (54). Another standout cornerback he coached at Duke was Mark Gilbert, who also earned All-ACC first-team recognition.
Beyond the Xs and Os, Jones has also made a mark off the field. In 2017, he published his book, "Always Play To Win," a collection of motivational quotes designed to foster a positive mindset. He has generously used the proceeds from his book sales and speaking engagements to provide financial support for college students from his hometown of Woodruff, S.C.
And what about his own playing days? Jones was a formidable player himself, earning two-time All-SEC cornerback honors at Ole Miss in the 1990s. His coaching journey began as a graduate assistant with the Rebels in 1998 and 1999. He then moved on to Murray State as the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator (2000-04), followed by a stint coaching defensive backs at Middle Tennessee State (2005). He also coached cornerbacks at Memphis in 2007, where he crossed paths with Brent Pry, after a season coaching cornerbacks at Tulsa.
