The World Baseball Classic exhibitions are kicking off today, and there's a fascinating family connection making history! It seems there wasn't much back-and-forth needed between Netherlands manager Andruw Jones and his son, Diamondbacks prospect Druw Jones, about teaming up for the WBC. Druw shared with Arizona Sports that his father was always joking, 'You've got to come play for me,' and Druw was thrilled to get the opportunity, pending team approval. This marks the first father-son manager-player duo in WBC history!
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are focusing heavily on defense this spring, especially after a challenging season in that department in 2025. So far, in 10 games, they've already committed 7 errors. While some of these are from minor league players still developing their defensive skills, the overall defensive execution has shown some early weaknesses. Of course, it's important to remember that key players like Carlos Santana and Nolan Arenado, who are gold glove-caliber defenders, are currently away preparing for the WBC. Nevertheless, the frequent defensive lapses have been noticeable.
But here's where it gets interesting regarding player decisions: We now know the team that offered pitcher Merrill Kelly a 3-year deal – a deal he ultimately turned down to sign a 2-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Why would he spurn a longer offer? Drumroll please... taxes in California! It's a significant factor that can influence a player's decision, even when a longer commitment is on the table.
Around the League, there's a compelling case for Paul Goldschmidt to enter the Hall of Fame. With a career 63.8 WAR, he's a strong contender. However, Hall voters can be notoriously tough on first basemen, often looking for 400 career home runs, a mark Goldschmidt might not reach. Yet, the precedent set by Todd Helton (369 home runs, 61.8 WAR) suggests that Goldschmidt, with his MVP Award and multiple high finishes, is on track for eventual enshrinement.
And this is the part most people miss when discussing player journeys: The tale of Randal Grichuk is quite a ride. After splitting last season between the Diamondbacks and the Royals, this marked his fifth team in five seasons. He had a particularly strong showing with Arizona in 2024, hitting .291 with 12 home runs and a 139 wRC+. However, his performance dipped significantly after being traded to Kansas City, where his offensive numbers and overall effectiveness declined. He was essentially replacement-level with the D-backs and below replacement-level with the Royals.
Major League Baseball is also innovating! The Spring Breakout series will transform into a tournament in 2027 and 2028. This single-elimination format will crown champions in both the Grapefruit League and the Cactus League. The tournament is being held off until 2026 to avoid any conflict with this year's World Baseball Classic. What do you think about this new tournament format? Does it add excitement, or is it an unnecessary addition? Let us know in the comments below!
